* * *

Ulrich Rasmussen knew they were doomed. When they tangled with an Afghan fighter, and nearly lost their lives, he took it as a sign the operation they’d embarked on was as good as over. The enemy was too strong, the Afghan Government, Ishaq Shamar’s army, even Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. The generals in command of the current Coalition effort to free Afghanistan of insurgent activity would go ape when they learned of the mercenary operation to free the women. It wasn’t the way things were done, not within NATO, not within the United Nations.

When they’d entered the headquarters of the Independent Islamic State, he knew they’d gone too far. Despite its illegal nature, the troubled and bloody region enjoyed a de facto existence. As a state, it deserved a degree of respect, not armed men bursting through the doors shooting and killing. It had been a mistake to come here; there were laws, rules in place to govern this kind of activity. And men like him to implement those rules.

He made a decision to put things right, even if it cost Anna her life. He was a career diplomat, and he would handle this matter with the calm professionalism the UN expected from its senior figure. Rasmussen put down his rifle and waited in the shadows.

Bullets whistled past him as the battle ripped across the building. At one time, a man even crawled toward his hiding place, clutching his belly from where his intestines were tumbling out, like long, shiny snakes. The man needed help. He was keening terrible cries of pain, but he stayed where he was. He had more important matters to attend to and couldn’t break cover for a mere wounded man.

He watched Stoner and Ivan emerge from the basement with the women. The firefight escalated as they raced through the first floor, guns blazing, and disappeared up the staircase, leaving more Afghan bodies scattered around him. Still he waited. The firing increased, then died away, and at last, the moment he’d been waiting for arrived. More men were arriving, and he heard what he’d hoped to hear, a voice that spoke with authority, a leader. Someone he could talk to as an equal. His limited knowledge of Pashtu was enough for him to understand they addressed him as ‘General.’

Definitely a man I can do business with. Proper business, sensible men talking to each other like adults. Not these mercenaries, men who do business at the point of a gun. Anna’s best hope is a discussion between like-minded men.

The Afghans approached, their weapons held ready to fire, behind them, the man who had to be this General. His clothes were of better quality and his bearing of a man born to command, like Rasmussen himself, although his pockmarked face was ugly and his beard ragged. Instead of leggings under his robe, he wore camos, and his pistol belt and holster were of brown leather, polished to a high sheen. He looked around, and when his gaze fell on the area the UN man sheltered in, he stepped out.
